A Mad Men Inspired Haul

Mad Men is one of my very favorite TV shows. Not only do I love the writing and acting, the makeup is spot on. It is gorgeous, simple, and captures the decade. Everyone looks good in a cat eye, mascara, and a bold lip. It is such a simple look, but so glamorous at the same time! For winged eyeliner I find that the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink works great. Here is what I picked up to finish off the look.

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Madrague

Since I want the winged eyeliner to standout, I keep my lids simple. I had been contemplating purchasing this duo for a while. It seemed too simple to spend $34 on. However I decided to go for it and am very pleased. It is very simple, but the colors really complement my skin tone. Sephora describes these two matte colors as a cream and caramel. The cream color does not give off much color but is great to neutralize the lid. I use the caramel color in my crease to create some depth. I have enjoyed this duo more than I thought I would and use it for many everyday looks.

MAC Russian Red

This is a very well-known color from the MAC lipstick line. It is described as an intense blueish-red with a matte finish. I enjoy wearing red lipstick throughout the year. I tend to lean towards more blue hued reds during fall and winter and orangey reds during spring and summer. Mad Men actresses frequently wear a variety of matte red lipstick shades, and they always look stunning. If you want to try a red lip but are not sure where to start, here are a couple of pointers. First of all, be confident! Sure it is bold, but you look awesome in it, trust me. Second, find your perfect red. There are so many different shades of red that it can be a little overwhelming. I think a great place to start is by going to a MAC counter. All the lipsticks are out for you to swatch and see which would look best with your skin tone. If you want to try a red lip and do not want to spend much but still get a great color, my third pointer is to try Revlon’s Really Red. It is also a blue based matte red lipstick. Another wallet friendly option is Revlon’s Colorburst Matte Balm in Standout, which I will talk about next. Revlon really knows how to make a good red lipstick!

Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Standout

I have never had such a hard time finding a product! Finding the new Lacquer and Matte Balm collection from Revlon has been nearly impossible. Really quick, the lacquers look pretty but they do have a silver sparkle to them. I have heard some people say after the color fades, the sparkles are left on your lips so I have not purchased any. However, Standout from the matte collection is a gorgeous red that goes onto your lips differently than you may expect. The packaging makes this color look different than the color that transfers onto your lips. Standout is a perfect red that does not lean blue or orange. The crayon like application makes it easy to apply and the color payoff is very opaque. These balms do not seem to dry out your lips like most matte lipsticks can do and have a slight peppermint smell to them that does not linger for long after applying. If you spot these in your local drugstore, I highly suggest you try one! I just picked up Striking, which is a more orangey red that I thought would be fun to try for spring.

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Kiss Me Quick

Lip liners really help my lipstick stay in place longer. I love to use them with red lipstick because it allows you to outline the lips to ensure a perfect red pout. The reason I do not like using lip liners is because I always find them really drying. However, the Pro Longwear lip pencils from MAC are very creamy and not nearly as drying as some other brands. They go on effortlessly and are velvety on the lips. Kiss Me Quick is described by MAC as a yellow red. However, this liner goes well with many blue based lipsticks and matches Russian Red well.
