It took for what seemed like too long to find a cleanser that worked with my sensitive skin, helped with breakouts, and did not leave my skin feeling stripped and dried. However, I have found five that work well for me and would recommend to you.
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
This is excellent for normal to
oily skin and will not leave your skin feeling stripped or too dry even though
it takes care of built up oils on your skin. Once lathered, it does turn into a
nice foam. It is gentle enough to take off eye makeup, however does not
completely do the job for me. After cleansing, I still need to follow up with a
makeup remover to thoroughly remove all of my eye makeup. It has the ingredient
niacinamide, which has anti-aging properties and improves the skin’s overall appearance
by helping to restore the skin’s natural barrier. Out of all the cleansers
reviewed in this post, this one is the most used and loved!

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
I was totally turned off the first
time I used this. It looks milky like a lotion but also feels like lotion upon
application. Honestly, I thought somehow CeraVe accidentally put the cleanser
label on what was supposed to be one of their lotions. It is hard to believe
that this is one of my favorite cleansers now. Although I do not find it to
take off eye makeup well, once rinsed off it leaves your skin feeling like
there is a layer of lotion on. Skin feels supple, hydrated, and not greasy. While
this cleanser won’t work for everyone, those with dry skin will be grateful for
the hydrating effects that are left behind after rinsing. This cleanser gets a
lot of love from me during the winter months. I also find that using this helps
me achieve a dewier foundation look.

As a side
note for both CeraVe cleansers, I wanted to point out what they have in common.
Both are unscented and non-comedogenic (even the hydrating one… though your
face will not have that squeaky clean feel after use). Ceramides and hyaluronic
acid are ingredients used in both cleansers. Ceramides help replenish the skin’s
natural barrier as well as provide hydration. Hyaluronic acid helps plump the skin
by aiding with hydration. These cleansers will never leave your skin feeling
stripped or dried out. If you have sensitive skin these options are worth
looking into.

Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser
This is another option for those
who need hypoallergenic cleansers. The foaming action is not as good as the
CeraVe option; however this removes eye makeup better. I still follow up with
additional makeup remover just to be sure I will not wake up with raccoon eyes.
There is a slight scent, but nothing overpowering and does not linger.

Now let’s
get into cleansers that have some salicylic acid action goin’ on…
Alba Botanica Acnedote Deep Pore Wash
This cleanser has 2% salicylic acid
treatment and claims to still fight breakouts after you’ve rinsed. The thing I
love with this cleanser is that even though the strength of salicylic acid is
high, it did not dry out my skin. My skin is easily irritated and has certain
spots that can easily become flakey. I found this to be easy on my skin even
though it is a very clarifying cleanser. There is an herbal scent to it but
nothing too strong. If you want that squeaky clean feel and the benefits of
salicylic acid, I recommend this one.
Alba Botanica Acnedote Deep Pore Wash...$9.95 |
Murad Time Release Acne Cleanser
The salicylic acid concentration is
a little lower with this one (0.5%). I purchased this when I was having a lot
of trouble with hormonal cystic acne across my chin area hoping the time
release technology would be beneficial. I do not think this cleanser helped my
case of acne simply because hormones were the problem…and no cleanser is going
to fix that. I can say that it is not drying and has a similar texture that the
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser has. However, it does not feel like a layer of lotion
has been left behind. It has hyaluronic acid to help keep the skin moisturized.
There is no foaming action, it has a light scent, and leaves your skin with
that tingling fresh feeling. It does feel like a higher quality cleanser, but
you pay extra for that.

I just
bought a Clarisonic, not sure what took me so long! I will see which cleansers work
well with it and report back. Comment below with which cleansers are your favorite
and which you find work well with the Clarisonic!
